Is Launchpad For You?
Your Mission: the Launchpad Attitude
The Coordinator will contact you for an interview. S/he needs to be sure you've got what it takes to combine work and study; to make a good impression on your workplace and and commit to completing the tertiary study course (if applicable), in business administration and practice.
At the interview, you will need to show:
- Good personal Presentation
- Excellent communication skills - written and verbal
- That you want to gain further qualifications
- An interest in administration/office work
- A good grasp of basic Maths and English (At least NCEA Level 1)
Lift Off Complete
After the interview, the Coordinator will let you know if you have made it onto the programme. Even if you don't, they will have some helpful advice for your next move. If you are accepted, the next step is to find you a job.
This can take up to a few months, and you may end up going to several interviews. But we keep looking until we (or you) find what we're looking for.
The Journey Begins
Once you have a job, it's time to start the study programme. Your Coordinator will help to organise this with both you and your employer.
The Quest for Qualifications
Polytechnic classes (if applicable) are held during work time for one session of three to four hours each week. You will need to put some of your own time into your study. Tutors report back to the Coordinator and your employer on your progress. Content varies in each region but generally includes a business administration certificate covering computing, general office, financial and communication skills at Level 3. There are also some tasks that get assessed in the workplace by a workplace supervisor. It will be different to school but the tutors and your supervisor are there to help if you need it - just ask.
Your Fellow Explorers
The Coordinator will meet you and your workplace supervisor once every 4-6 weeks. This is not to check up on you but to make sure your placement goes well for everyone. You can also talk to your tutors or classmates about assignments, or ask your workplace supervisor and colleagues for help with tasks in the workbook.
To Infinity and Beyond
Once you have:
- Finished 12 months employment, and
- Completed and passed your course of study
You will graduate from the Launchpad programme (at a special ceremony) and receive a Launchpad certificate. This tells future employers that you have experience, commitment and perseverance! It is an achievement to be proud of.
Control your Destiny
At the end of the year, the Coordinator and your employer help you prepare for the next step. This may be any one (or more) of:
- A permanent position with your current employer
- A new role with a new employer
- Further study at a local tertiary provider
