What some of our employers have to say about us..........
Employer Profile – Fulton Hogan
Formed in 1933 in Dunedin, Fulton Hogan now has four and a half thousand employees spread over New Zealand and Australia. Most people are familiar with the blue trucks that can be seen at road work sites through out New Zealand. Fulton Hogan is also involved in other activities such as road construction, road maintenance, quarrying, sign manufacture, forestry, civil works such as bridge construction, asphalt manufacture, transport, and facilities management.
Fulton Hogan Canterbury Business Manager, Derek Alston has employed a Launchpad student in each of the four years he has been based in Christchurch. “They have all started off as office juniors, and then after about a year they have been able to take advantage of other employment opportunities within the organisation and step upwards. This has been a win-win for Fulton Hogan and the Launchpad student.” Derek goes on to say that one of the rewards of management is seeing young school leavers enter an organisation with minimal skills and through hard work, move up the career ladder. “Currently we employ four people who have been through the Launchpad scheme. They all started as office juniors and now do very good jobs as accounts receivable, accounts payable, contract administrator and training co-ordinator.”
Derek says he has found Launchpad a very good way to meet future staffing needs by taking on a Launchpad student as an office junior, training them in FH systems and culture and then promoting them when they have gained some experience. “I would view it almost as an office apprenticeship – there is an academic overview to what they learn, but also a good grounding in the organisation as well. Launchpad has worked well for us”
Fulton Hogan currently has one Launchpad student in its Christchurch office administration team and one in their Signs division.

CEO Louise Edwards says that as a Christchurch employer she feels they have a responsibility in providing young people with opportunities for career and personal development. “I believe it’s important for young people to have mentoring and coaching when they’re starting out in their work life. So often they don’t know what they want to do and where they want to go. The scheme gives them work and exposes them to a variety of different roles in our organization. We’ve had some wonderful people working for us on the scheme. While they might initially lack experience, we’ve found they are enthusiastic, show initiative and learn quickly.''
Perpetual Trust currently employ two Launchpad Scholarship Recipients, one as an Office Junior and the other as a Junior Accountant.
