Interview with Jenny Horner - an example of how we help young people

Jenny Horner won a Launchpad scholarship with Hinton & Associates Ltd in Nelson.  After completing her Scholarship she moved to Christchurch and worked as an Administration Manager for Powerstore.  After a year, she found her passion for sales and got a great job working with Vodafone.  Jenny then got the travel bug and moved to Melbourne and the Gold Coast where she continued to work for Vodafone.  After gaining her Level 2 Certificate in Business with Launchpad, Jenny signed up for a Level 4 Certificate in Business and Administration which she is currently completing through correspondence.  Jenny now has settled with Wahlstom Financial Services and says that the Launchpad programme was definately the best thing she could have done upon leaving school.  The support and encouragement received from Launchpad was fantastic and her work ethic grew immensely.  Jenny says she would still recommend the programme to any school leaver as it gives so many opportunities for the future.

What have you got out of the scholarship?

I have gained work experience in the administrative side of an office.  I have learnt a lot this past year with the first hand work experience and the course.  I was able to relate the course back to my work duties - I found the customer service module at Polytech a huge benefit to my work; along with the support from Jude about CV’s and interview situations.  I have gained more confidence being on the programme by having to deal with people of all ages at work and at Polytech. You have to be really good at communicating and being shy isn’t really an option!... I have met a lot of new people and some great contacts for future job positions.  Getting to know all the other scholarship recipients was also really great. We can all talk about things that are happening at work... I have made some really good friends out of it.

Why would you recommend the programme to other students?

The scholarship provides you with qualifications - that are free - and work experience. This is a great benefit when applying for future jobs as employers like to see experience on your CV.  You get to work with great people and have lots of fun.  Having monthly meetings with your coordinator is also really beneficial.  If there are any problems then she helps you through them and also can talk to your supervisor which takes pressure off you. You get to met many great people... not only the ones you work with, but the customers as well.  And of course the others on the scholarship programme as well. Also the money side of it is great - I’ve got the independence I needed.

How did you find your first year out of school?

I found it great but hard at the same time.  Having weekends free instead of doing your part-time job is great! I thought at first I wouldn’t be able to handle the hours of 8:30am to 5:00pm but once you start, it just becomes a routine.  I grew up a lot when I left school. It was hard at first because I didn’t get to see my friends as much as I wished... With most of my friends being Year 13, I found it hard when they talked about the good side of school - but then I looked at what I had achieved with Polytech and a great job... and at last my own car and then it didn’t bother me!  Now I have had my friends stressing out about exams and not wanting to go out - which I understand - and I’m really glad I’ve made the choices I have!"
